Cooperation in the Hydrogen Sector

You will visit Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony for 4 days and learn about business models along the value chain of smart energies, with a focus on green hydrogen.

The Saxony-Anhalt Economic Development Corporation (IMG) and the Saxony Economic Development Corporation (WFS) invite Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish companies and networks to an entrepreneurial trip to the "Mitteldeutsches Revier", the former (and still operating) mining region in eastern Germany. Participants will benefit from the extensive network of the organisers, Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI), the foreign trade promotion agency of the Federal Republic of Germany, IMG and WFS, as well as the local service providers, the company energiewaechter and the German Chambers of Industry and Trade in Finland, Norway and Sweden. The trip is part of the "GTAI Programme for the internationalisation of regions undergoing a structural change" (ISW).

Who should join:

Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish executives from companies, scientific institutions, networks and institutions within the value chain in the field of smart energy (with a focus on hydrogen) who are interested in cooperations in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt are invited. Participation is limited to 12 companies or institutions.

What we offer:

  • Organisation of a 4-day programme with visits to companies, industrial parks and research institutions
  • Briefings on market development
  • Networking event with industry experts and testimonials
  • Organisation of an individual matchmaking

Join the dynamic East of Germany

Smart energy solutions and hydrogen technologies are the key elements that drive climate-neutral economy. As a traditional industrial, chemical and energy region, East Germany has successfully developed value chains in both areas, and the potential the region presents provides great opportunities for cooperation and investment.

The German Federal States of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, which form the “Mitteldeutsches Revier” are one of the most innovative and attractive locations for successful business development within Germany and Europe.

Here you can find great platform for the new, emerging technologies and center of one of the most imporant industry clusters in Europe - with excellent research and development groups at universities, Fraunhofer institutes, and companies supplying materials, equipment, technology, and products.

In addition to a favourable geographic location in Europe, there are many important factors for deciding on cooperation with regional companies or investment. Some of these factors are the outstanding transport and telecommunication infrastructure, industrial sectoral diversity, highly qualified and motivated workforce, efficient research and development infrastructure, flexible administration working quickly, a comprehensive package of regional development assistance and grants and the unequal symbiosis of economics, science and culture.

These are good conditions for the production of green hydrogen through electrolysis.

  • High hydrogen demand from industrial customers and consumers at approx. 3.6 billion m³/a
  • High potential for renewable energy generation with over 130 TWh/a
  • Germany's second-longest hydrogen pipeline with 150 km length
  • Large storage potential in salt caverns with approx. 3 billion M³.

Your are welcome to be part of this successful development.

Why Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt?

  • Chemical Region

Saxony-Anhalt forms the core of the Central German chemical triangle. The Who's Who of the international chemical industry is at home here. And in Leuna, the company Linde is currently building the world's largest PEM electrolyser. So a lot of green electricity is needed, and the signs are sunny here, too. Solar Valley is a world-renowned centre and, with a 58 per cent share of electricity generation, Germany's front-runner.

At the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park, partners from science and industry are investigating how methanol and methanol derivatives can be produced from waste gases and green hydrogen. The Chemical Park is already cooperating with the Norwegian company "Statkraft". Nobian (formerly Axo Nobell) is the first company in Germany to supply green hydrogen from chlor-alkali electrolysis.

  • Hydrogen storage

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) is funding the "Real Laboratory of the Energy Transition": At the Bad Lauchstädt energy park near Leipzig, electricity is converted into hydrogen with a 30-megawatt electrolyser. The hydrogen is transported to the Leuna Chemical Park via a former natural gas pipeline. Incidentally, the Finnish company UPM is also based here.

  • Solar Center

Solar Center: More than 9 billion euros have been invested in Solar Valley by international investors since 1991. This has enabled the region to establish itself as a centre of excellence for industry-related research, renewable energies and storage technologies. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics (CSP) in Halle develop technologies, manufacturing processes and product concepts along the entire photovoltaic value chain for global companies.

  • Innovative Solutions for Mobility

Numerous companies are working on the production of synthetic fuels, the so-called e-fuels. The Chemieanlagenbau Chemnitz GmbH (CAC) corporation has developed a synthetic fuel together with the TU Bergakademie Freiberg with which every vehicle that has a gasoline or spark ignition engine can actually be driven in a climate friendly manner. The dream of “green” flight is being realized by the EDL Anlagenbau GmbH corporation in Leipzig with the HyKero project by producing a sustainable avia-tion fuel with the help of renewable electric power.

  • Unique projects

The region joins forces to create unique projects, also the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI). With LHyVe - Leipzig Hydrogen Value Chain for Europe - will be established an intelligent and regionally networked green hydrogen system as a beacon for efficient sector coupling.

  • Showcase companies

Sunfire Dresden in Dresden is a key company for the regional hydrogen economy: The company develops and produces particularly efficient high-temperature electrolysers (SOEC) as well as proven alkali plants and is involved in ambitious large-scale projects, such as the construction of the world's first megawatt-class high-temperature electrolyser in Rotterdam. In addition, the hydrogen trader HINT.CO has set up shop in Leipzig to enable investment in "green" hydrogen and gradually build up a functioning market for eco-hydrogen.

  • Broadly positioned research location

Saxony is broadly positioned in the research sector. With the HIC - Hydrogen & Mobility Innovation Center, one of four German hydrogen technology centres will be created in Chemnitz by 2025 with an industrial research, testing and certification campus for fuel cells and drive systems for hydrogen-powered road and rail vehicles that is unique in Europe.

  • Attractive funding opportunities

A wide range of public funding programmes are available to companies in Saxony for new investments, innovations, R&D and job creation - €600 million until 2027 for technology funding alone. The Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB) provides companies with comprehensive advice on this.

Participation opportunities

Besides the official site visits and appointments in the region, there will also be a half-day networking & matchmaking event on 6 September 2023 at the Airport Leipzig/Halle. The delegates from the Nordic countries will be given the opportunity to get in contact with German partners from industry, research and politics. The aim is to find potential business and project opportunities.

Background of the programme

Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) is the economic development agency of the Federal Republic of Germany. GTAI supports German companies setting up in foreign markets, promotes Germany as a business location and assists foreign companies setting up in Germany. This inbound delegation trip is part of their ISW-program, which has been developed for and with partners from the regions in structural change in order to internationally promote the individual regions‘ strengths and opportunities and facilitate cross-border cooperation. International companies have the chance to visit a specific German region in order to get to know a particular industry ecosystem and network with local industry players to elaborate their next steps to enter the German market and find new business partners
